Go Green at Home

Do your part to help the environment, while reducing two of your biggest monthly costs – energy and food it will provide instant gratification.  You may be doing some of these, but consider trying one or two more this summer. You will be glad you did.

Invest in a tankless water heater.  Upgrading your home's water heater is another great way to make a positive impact this summer. Not only are tankless water heaters more efficient and environmentally friendly, but they allow for endless hot water.  They are available in electric and gas models.  This can be effective at lowering the cost of hot water for any household.

Start a garden.  Even a small deck or backyard can provide fresh, organic vegetables and flowers at very little cost. And, it’s fun! It even makes John Leksander Smile

Go solar.  Summer is a great time to install solar panels on your home or garage. Most states offer incentive package and solar panels can make a dramatic impact on your home electricity bill. Solar water heaters are a cost-effective way to deliver hot water to your home. In case your solar power is not delivering enough hot water, look into how tankless water heaters can be used as a solar extender or backup.

Collect rain water.  A rain barrel is a great source for watering all your indoor plants and outdoor gardens.  You can also wash your car with nature’s best soft water.  A rain barrel also holds excessive amounts of rain, minimizing the impact of a heavy rain on your surroundings.

Dry your clothes outdoors.  A clothes dryer consumes a lot of energy and warms your house in the summer.  Retractable clothes lines can be easily installed on the side of your house or garage. Clothes come off the line fresh and crisp while saving you a lot of money.

Plant a tree or two.  Trees offer added aesthetics and value to your home while providing cleaner air and much appreciated shade to your house and patio.  Do a little research to determine the best trees for your needs, and how to properly space them.

Walk to work or store.  Walking not only stretches your dollars, it stretches your muscles as well. Face it most of us could use a little more exercise anyway.  Give it a try for a couple of weeks and you will wonder why you haven’t been doing that for years.  It also saves wear and tear on your vehicle.
